Dentists from Kool Smiles, a leading provider of quality dental care, teamed up with the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry to provide free dental care during the UMMC’s Dental Mission Week. Drs. Cristie Rives and Erica Rose assisted dental students in delivering needed dental treatments at no cost to more than 1,000 children and adults in the Jackson community. In addition to their staffing support, Kool Smiles also donated $1,700 to the program.
“Our dentists and staff at Kool Smiles are committed to ensuring that all children and families in the Jackson area have access to dental care,” said Dr. David Moore, Area Dental Director for Kool Smiles. “That is why we were excited to be a part of a program that not only gives back to families in need, but also provides training and community engagement opportunities for the next generation of dental leaders.”
During the free care week, which ran from Feb. 5 through Feb. 9, doctors and dental students provided free dental exams, cleanings, tooth restorations and extractions to underserved families in the area. As a part of the UMMC Dental Mission Week, a designated Give Kids A Smile day happened on Monday, Feb. 5 along with a visit from State Senator Hillman Frazier, and on Thursday, Feb. 8, veterans were treated in cooperation with the veterans hospital dentists who participated.
“The UMMC Dental Mission Week program gives dental students an opportunity to serve the community while gaining hands-on learning experience treating patients in need of quality care,” said Dr. David Felton, Dean of the UMMC School of Dentistry. “We thank all of the doctors who participated this year and helped guide students in delivering exceptional dental care to those who need it most.”
