Since our founding in 2002, Kool Smiles has provided more than $128 million in uncompensated dental care to the communities we serve.
Kool Smiles was founded on the belief that every person deserves a dentist, including those who don’t have insurance. Although we are proud to accept Medicaid and other insurance plans that most dentists do not, we also recognize that there are specific procedures that the American Dental Association (ADA) or American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommend where no specific reimbursement is available. In light of this, we believe it is our moral and professional obligation to follow through on ADA and AAPD recommended services in order to avoid future health problems and struggles. In fact, Kool Smiles has provided more than $128 million in uncompensated care to patients in our facilities.
Our community outreach programs include Operation Troop Treats, the largest Halloween candy exchange program by a dental organization in the United States. The program encourages healthy habits at home while supporting American troops serving abroad.
Sharing Smiles Day is a national day of free dental care for children, hosted by Kool Smiles dentists and staff volunteers. Since 2015, more than 2,100 children without dental insurance received much needed dental care at no cost during Sharing Smiles Day.
Education is essential to our mission of improving dental health access and outcomes among underserved communities. That’s why we offer free dental health lesson plans and toothbrushes for K–5 classrooms. In 2017, our lesson plans were used in more than 30,000 classrooms nationwide.
Kool Smiles is proud to offer scholarships and classroom grants as part of our continued dedication to dental health education, community outreach, and charitable support for the next generation of inspiring leaders who are passionate about making a difference. Now in its second year, the My Kool Smiles Scholarship Fund awards $5,000 to the winner of the dental health essay content. In 2018, the My Kool Smiles Classroom Grant Program launched and provided a total of $5,000 in grants to five different teachers across the country. Kool Smiles has also supported increased access to dental care through an $8,000 donation to the Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD) to expand service offerings at its Dental Student Outreach Clinic.
